Which have always emerged in regions inhabited by Turks, is closely tied to the Turks. The Turks introduced this technique first to the Islamic world and then to the entire world, particularly through the states established during the Great Seljuk Sultanate period. However, no carpets from the Great Seljuks have survived; the Konya carpets from the Anatolian Seljuks formed the foundation of carpet art that developed until the twentieth century. For seven centuries, Turkish carpet art has shown continuous and brilliant development, always creating new types.

In fact, this area is dominated by the use of fur and animal hides. The Asian Huns also incorporated these motifs in their metalworks. In contrast, the reindeer seen in the wide inner border are part of this region's fauna.

Discovered in a kurgan chamber that had turned into ice, among a mummified dead horse, a four-wheeled carriage, and other household items, this carpet first garnered widespread attention when it was published in 1953 and was later extensively introduced. The carpet, measuring 1.89 x 2 meters and made from very fine wool (yarn), is an incredible masterpiece with 36,000 Ghiordes knots per 10 cm², showcasing unparalleled craftsmanship that has not been surpassed since.
Read MoreAbout 40 years before Rudenko's discovery of the Pazyryk carpet, Aurel Stein had found knotted carpet fragments from the 3rd and 4th centuries in LouLan, west of Lop Lake in East Turkestan, during his 1906-1908 expeditions. These fragments were made by knotting threads twisted from hard, thick, and undyed wool onto a single warp, sometimes interweaving five rows of weft. The simple patterns consisted of bright and vibrant colors—three shades of yellow, dark blue, red, matte green, and brown—forming diamonds, stripes, and highly stylized flowers. These pieces are now preserved in the British Museum in London and the National Museum in New Delhi, India.

These include the Pazyryk carpet from the 3rd century BC left by the Asian Huns, small carpet fragments from the 3rd to 6th centuries made using a simple knotting technique on a single warp found in East Turkestan, and geometric patterned carpet pieces from the Abbasid era found in Fustat. It is known that carpets were made and exported to other countries in Bukhara and other major centers of Turkestan during the 10th century, continuing until the devastation caused by the Mongols in the 13th century. Carpets made with the Gördes Turkish knot from this period and from the Great Seljuks are the oldest carpets that form the foundation of all carpet art.
Read MoreThe carpets found in the Alaeddin Mosque in Konya were likely commissioned by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad after the mosque's expansion in 1221 and endowed to the mosque during his lifetime. These large carpets, designed to cover the wide space and measuring 5-6 meters in length, are among the most monumental examples of Seljuk art. The primary colors are dark and light shades of blue and red. Two tones of green are also seen. Off-white or cream colors, which are not very distinct, are used primarily for outlining, along with dark brown. Bright yellow appears rarely and in secondary importance alongside these other colors.
Read MoreTurkish handmade carpets are world-renowned for being products of a long-standing tradition and art. These carpets are created by combining high-quality materials with meticulously crafted patterns. The production and design stages consist of the following steps:
Natural materials such as sheep wool, silk, and cotton are typically used in the production of Turkish handmade carpets. Wool is chosen for its durability and softness, while silk adds shine and a fine texture to the carpet. Cotton is used to form the weaving base of the carpet.
Once the selected wool is cleaned, it is spun into yarn. This yarn is then dyed using natural dyes. Traditional Turkish carpets use plant-based and natural dyes known as "root dyes." These dyes give the carpet long-lasting and vibrant colors.
One of the most striking features of Turkish carpets is their rich and intricate patterns. These patterns are often inspired by nature, mythology, and daily life. Carpet designers first draw the patterns on paper, which are then transferred onto the carpet. Each region has its unique patterns and motifs. For example, Hereke carpets are known for their fine and detailed designs, while Konya carpets feature simpler and geometric patterns.
Weaving is the most crucial stage that determines the quality of the carpet. Traditional Turkish carpets are woven on hand looms using the double knot technique (Gördes knot). This technique makes the carpet more durable and long-lasting. The weaving process is meticulous and time-consuming; it can take months to complete a single carpet.
After weaving is complete, the carpet undergoes a special washing process to set the colors and clean the carpet. This process enhances the softness and shine of the carpet. Then, the edges of the carpet are trimmed, and final touches are made.
In the final stage, carpets undergo quality control. During this process, the carpet is checked for any defects. Flawless carpets are prepared for sale and presented to buyers worldwide.
The living room is often the central gathering place in a home, and a large, intricate Turkish carpet can serve as a stunning focal point. These carpets not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also provide warmth and comfort underfoot. Popular choices include large rectangular or oval carpets with elaborate designs.

These carpets are usually chosen for their durability and ease of cleaning, as this area is prone to spills and stains. Medium to large-sized carpets with symmetrical patterns work well in this space. For the bedroom, Turkish carpets add a cozy and luxurious feel. Smaller rugs can be placed beside the bed, allowing you to step onto a soft, warm surface each morning. Alternatively, a large carpet can be used to cover most of the floor area, complementing the bedroom's decor and providing comfort.

They are designed to withstand frequent use and are often adorned with geometric or floral patterns that guide the eye along the hallway. While not as common, smaller Turkish rugs can be used in the kitchen to add a splash of color and comfort, especially in front of the sink or stove. These rugs should be easy to clean and resistant to moisture.
